iTunes Review

Diverse in sound yet focused in message, this thought-provoking and emotionally resonant release is consistently strong. The overriding themes here are love and responsibility, framed in terms of romantic uncertainties (“Safe to Land,” “There Must Be a Light”) and spiritual yearnings (“Closer,” “Heaven,” “Forgive Me”). Singer/lyricist Dan Haseltine shows particular insight when grappling with complacency and alienation in tracks like “Headphones” and “Scenic Route.” If tunes like “Weapons” have a bleak cast, “Two Hands” and “Heart” are radiant with hope. Musically, the album often recalls the bittersweet folk-pop of the band’s initial albums while drawing upon an expanded palette of ‘80s-style synthesizer and guitar sounds. Big, chunky chords are contrasted with delicate vocal harmonies and keyboard filigree, lending intricate textures to tracks like “Boys (Lesson One)” and the instrumental “The Long Fall.” The Long Fall Back to Earth finds this reliably creative foursome rising to a higher plateau.

Another Great Album By Jars Of Clay

Jars of Clay is one of the best and longest-lived christian artists ever. They always manage to incorporate new and interesting styles to their music without losing the original sound that fans have come to love. This Album does not disappoint. Immediately I can say "weapons" "Boys" "Hero" and "there might be a light" are all amazing. I can't wait to listen to it again.

Outstanding work

Great album, good to hear the band continuing to re-invent themselves. 'Two Hands', 'Closer' and 'Boys' are my favs. It's neat to see the band refuse to get stale. Look forward to seeing them take this sound to the road.

Can't disagree enough with 'Liquid Trails' earlier assessment. I wouldn't classify Jars as a 'Christian' band (whatever that means), but they do write from a source of faith, a faith that is encouraged to be challenging at times (Psalm 88!), sexy at other times (Song of Solomon), and can not even mention God directly by name (Esther), but still can be faithful. Sounds like life to me.

You guys are missing the piont...

I just saw these guys in concert last week(Jars your knoxville concert was awesome) and they said that the were trying not to make his album a high godly one but one that tells about how humans interact, and how relationships form and fall apart

Biography

Formed: 1993 in Greenville, IL

Genre: Christian & Gospel

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Jars of Clay were the breakout band of the so-called alternative CCM movement of the '90s, scoring an enormous mainstream hit with the debut single "Flood" and enjoying platinum sales. The group's lyrics may have been exclusively Christian, but their acoustic-oriented music fit perfectly into the folky jangle pop wing of alternative rock radio, at the time a rarity on the contemporary Christian music scene. Such success set the stage for breakthroughs by Christian bands like dc Talk and Sixpence...
